Title: Holy GraceMedium: Acrylic and Oil paint
Size: 2 ft by 2 ft Completion: Exhibition Text :The Holy Grace is about me wanting to express religion as it is part of who I am. When talking about religion I am not someone who is obsessed with it, I am someone who believes in Catholic and respects it. When I was little I loved watching a show called la rosa de guadalupe that was about the virgin Mary, My Inspiration for this piece was Franz Ittenbach and Nicholas Roerich

Inspiration:
When I was looking for inspiration, I remember I took a picture of an art work at the art museum, as well as the exhibition text. The art work was by Franz Ittenbach, and the inspired art work was Mother of the World in a landscape, 1845. When wanting to do a paint of the virgin Mary I wanted to have an Art work that has a robe with shading/texture to the robe as I wanted a reference artwork, so I know how I could add shading to the robe and to work out an layout.
My Second Inspiration Was an Artwork By Nicholas Roerich. The piece I was inspired by was Mother of the World. I was inspired by this piece because of the colors used and how the artist made the paint look like it's shining/glow, I also like the idea of the design of the robe. I was also Inspired by this piece because it was part of the symbolism period, as the piece has my symbolism in it. When wanting to paint the Virgin Mary I want to have symbolism in it as it is part of my religion. As religion is part of my life and some what makes me who I am. that is why I wanted to painted the Virgin Mary since she is really important to my religion. |
Planning sketch:
When Planning my planning sketches I wanted to do the virgin Mary how it is since in my culture as the virgin Mary can look little different in different cultures, As One my inspiration the Mother of the World is how the Virgin Mary is see in my culture. I wanted to do something similar, but I also wanted to try something new. This was my final planning sketch that I used.

Experimentation:
One of my experimentation was giving the robe shading as I never add Shading to clothes in my painting. I want to make my piece look realistic or somewhat realistic, as the face doesn't look realistic. At first I was having trouble but then I started to to get the hang of it as all I had to do was put some dark paint in places you wanted to add the shading, one done you would blend it out, was done blending out you add light white to were the original color was to make it look " real".

Process
step 1,2&3:
when started I had to find holders for the canvas I had to make sure they where the same side and that they were not damaged. Once done I will connect the holders together and made sure they made a perfect 90 degree angle. Once done I staple them together and Once done stapling I start to secure it by grabbing a hammer and hitting the staples . Once done with the canvas I start to layout the amount of canvas I needed. Once I was done cutting the canvas I need for both canvases I start to prepare for stapling the canvas on to the holder. Once I made sure that I had one side tighten I started to staple it and I did it for all the side. |
Step 4, 5 &6:
. Once done stapling all side I start to fold the corners and start to staple them as well. Once I am finally done with stapling I make sure the staples are secure with a hammer once done with that I start to cut the extra canvas hanging from the actual canvas. Once I was done with cutting the extra canvas I start gesso my canvases. I add two layer of gesso on my canvas. Once done I start to paint the background black, I then start to paint the face with oil paint. I started to paint with out a sketch on the canvas. |
Step 7,8&9:
Once done having the outline of the face I start to go over it with oil paint again, but this time making it look nice once done I start to paint the robe. I paint the robe white first, then with light blue. Once done I start to fix the face again to make it look better, Once done making the face look better I began to add shading to the robe. I started by putting some dark paint in places you wanted to add the shading, one done you would blend it out, was done blending out you add light white to were the original color was to make it look " real". |
Reflection:
When planning this piece, I was little worried about painting with oil paint again, even though I have some experience with it. The only thing I found hard with oil paint is trying to paint realistic, that is probably what I need to practice on. When painting I had little time since I was busy with personal thing so that is why the painting may look mess, I am going to go back and fix when I have time.
I was planning on using gold/metal paint on the yellow halo to give it little brightness but I didn't have time to do it.
